Time Line for St. Stephen’s
1836 – 1940
1835 |
Lot at 67 Anson Street purchased and cornerstone laid on St. Stephen’s Day, by Bishop Bowen. Missionary-in-charge is the Rev. Paul Trapier. Total cost of the building is $11, 285. |

1836 |
The parish is consecrated on November 24 with the Rev. Paul Trapier preaching the sermon. The trustees of the church are the rectors of the three city churches. |

|
||
1838 |
The parish reports growth. The Rev. Robert T. Howard becomes assistant to the Rev. Trapier until May, 1840 when the Rev. Trapier becomes Rector of St. Michael’s but continues in charge of St. Stephen’s. |

||
1840 |
The Rev. T. C. Dupont succeeds Trapier as missionary-in-charge and reports the following: “97 white communicant and 11 colored.” The average Church School attendance is 136. |

||
1845 |
January 1st inaugurates the opening of a parochial school with 32 boys and 34 girls in attendance. The Rev. Dupont fills in as a teacher and the Rev. J. R. Fell becomes his assistant. |

||
1848 |
The Rev. T. C. Dupont dies in the spring of this year. The Rev. Edward Wallace takes charge assisted by the Rev. James Ward Simmons. |

||
1849 |
The church is repaired and gas lights are added. It is reported that the “entire lower floor of the church “was filled with worshippers.” (Approx. 130-140 people) The current expenses of the “chapel” are met by offerings collected at the door. The Rev. Mr. Simmons left his duties at St. Stephen’s in 1853 and soon after died of yellow fever. His position was briefly filled by the Rev. P. G. Jenkins, M.D. |

1854 |
Regular communicants numbered at “120 white and 9 colored.” Parochial visits numbered at 2,215 owing to the outbreak of yellow fever. |

1856 |
November 25th Bishop Davis ordains the Rev. Lucien C. Lance to the Priesthood, and the Rev. H. L. Phillips to the Deaconate. .The Bishop is assisted by the Rev. Messrs. Wallace, Trapier, Porter and Gadsden. The parochial school is discontinued because of the lack of an instructor. |

1857 |
The Rev. Mr. Wallace continues his work and reports 293 services at the chapel and 312 services at the Church Home. |

1859 |
The Rev. H. L. Phillips becomes the assistant to Mr. Wallace. |

1860 |
The Rev. Mr. Wallace dies. |

||
1866 |
St. Stephen’s becomes an “independent church” with the Rev. J. Mercier Green as Rector. |

1869 |
The parish reports 28 communicants; Sunday School 33; services 98. |

||
1871 |
The Rev W. H. Hanckel succeeds the Rev. Mr. Green until his death in 1879. |

1871 - 1879 |

During this period the parish is repaired and pews are donated by the Church of the Holy Communion (still here to this day) |

1874 |
A parish lay association is established and a Ladies’ Working Society established as well; 51 communicants were reported. |

1880 |
The Rev. Edward R. Miles assumes duties as Rector but the church closes with his resignation. The congregation unites with St. Luke’s as Mr. Miles becomes Rector of that parish. Only two family do not go with him to St. Luke’s. |

1882 - 93 |

Under the leadership of the city missionary, the Rev. G.F. Degan, the church reopened only to close again when he left to become Rector of the Church of the Advent in Nashville, Tenn. St. Stephen’s then reverted to the trusteeship of the diocese, April 6, 1894. |

1911 |
A mission with a parochial school opens at 67 Anson Street and continues for about 12 years.. |
||

||
1923 |
The entire congregation of Mount Moriah Union Methodist Church together with its minister, the Rev. William M. Morgan, applies and is accepted to become members of the Episcopal Church and of St. Stephen’s under the guidance of Bishop Guerry. All are Confirmed by him. On May 30th the Bishop Confirms Mr. Morgan and five of his church officers, the confirmation class having been prepared by Archdeacon Baskervill. Mr. Morgan was appointed lay reader to officiate, and licensed to preach by the Bishop. He was later ordained to the Episcopal Diaconate on May 22, 1926. |

The Rev. Mr. Morgan continues his ministry until his death on November 9, 1930. |

1931 |
The Rev. Osmond Jonathan McLeod is placed in charge of St. Stephen’s and is also in charge of the Church of the Mediator in Edisto. He continues in charge until 1939. At his death the Archdeacon of the Diocese, Baskervill (?) assumes leadership. |

1940 |
The Rev. St. Julian A. Simpkins becomes Rector and the kindergarten is conducted by his wife, Mrs. St. J. A. Simpkins.. |
