Donations to Charleston Area Senior Citizens (CASC) help purchase food at the Lowcountry Food Bank for their emergency food pantry. From July to December, 2011 they provided 132 households with food. CASC provides over 450 hot noon meals per day to homebound elderly. They have a waiting list of over 300. CASC also serves 10,000 noon meals at the senior center each year. Women make up more than 60% of the seniors facing the threat of hunger. The study, “Senior Hunger in the United States” (MOWAA 2009) ranked South Carolina as the second highest risk state in the nation. CASC’s housing complex, Ansonborough House, provides long term residency for homeless seniors who often move in only with a garbage bag holding their clothes. The Outreach Committee has set up a bright blue/green container in Parish Hall with CASC’s “wish list”. Some items needed are non-perishable foods, personal items, linens. If you have any small furniture, please contact the Outreach Committee.
